Louis Oscar Griffith Paintings
Appointed fine art sale highlights from Michaan's June fine auction will present pieces from Louis Oscar Griffith. “Sail Boats in Harbor, New Orleans ” is wonderfully executed as Griffith's impressionistic take on capturing “real life. ” His rendition of the water, boats, masts and land are presented in symbiotic harmony, as is evident in not only his brush strokes but also in his use of color. “Sail Boats in Harbor, New Orleans ” will be sold as lot 2027 at an estimate of $15,000-25,000. Griffith's masterful “Autumn Landscape ” will also accompany the piece at sale, to be sold as lot 2028 at an auction estimate of $7,000-9,000.
LEROY NEIMAN (American 1921-2012) "Rick in the Pit, 1987"
Featured in the March offerings is this original work of art by Leroy Neiman titled "Rick in the Pit, 1987." Penske racer Rick Meers was captured at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway by the artist, who created the sketch from the pit. The mixed media on paper artwork comes with a certificate of authenticity and measures approximately 28 by 33 inches. Neiman's work has been internationally praised as he was commissioned as the official artist of five Olympiads. This piece will be offered at an auction estimate of $6,000-9,000.
Pair of Knoll Barcelona Chairs with Ottoman
This lot of Knoll Barcelona chairs with accompanying ottoman will be sold in Michaan's 20th Century Design Auction. The Knoll Barcelona chair stands as an icon of modern design, as well as a fixture of the modern movement. It remains one of modern designs most recognized objects, with its simple elegance defining the notion that less is more. The chairs are fashioned in their original tan leather upholstery and polished stainless steel frames. A matching Knoll ottoman completes the furniture suite and all of the pieces remain in excellent condition. The furniture set will be offered on July the 6th at an auction estimate of $3,200-4,200.
Three lots of Japanese Export Silver
From a private estate collection are these three Japanese silver lots to be offered in the January estate auction at a range of price points. The pieces are creatively fashioned with decorative bamboo sprays framing a full moon. Lot 582 is a four piece silver tea service set complete with matching tea tray estimated at $8,000-10,000. Lot 584 contains a silver cocktail shaker with six matching cups and an associated flask at an estimate of $2,000-3,000. Completing the theme reflected in the highlighted lots is lot 586, consisting of a hand wrought silver cake tray and matching pie server at an estimate of $1,800-2,000.
Jade, White Stone, Black Stone, Sterling Silver Ring
Highlighting the sale is this gorgeous jade ring fashionably set in an Art Deco inspired mounting. The jade cabochon measures a substantial 11.7 by 18.1 by 8.1 millimeters and displays an ideal clover green hue with a lovely translucency. The stone is certified by a Mason-Kay Jadeite Authenticity Report that concludes, "natural jadeite jade - no dye or polymer detected - 'A' jade." The simplicity of the jade is wonderfully complimented by the clean, angular lines of the mounting; a beautiful marriage of East and West. The ring will be offered at an auction estimate of $7,000-8,000.
Liberty Indian Head Gold Coin Bracelet
This richly hued 18 karat yellow gold coin bracelet is a delightful find amongst Michaan's March jewelry lots. Six two and a half dollar Liberty Indian Head gold coins are linked side by side, forming the body of the bracelet. The piece is finished by a clasp of a three-dimensional design depicting a bird perched amongst cherry blossom branches. This bracelet of an approximate 7 1/2 inches in total length seems almost certain to captivate both fashion-forward bidders and coin aficionados alike. The Liberty Indian Head gold coin bracelet will be sold as lot 237 at an estimate of $1,500-2,000.
R. Lalique Opalescent Bacchantes Vase
This René Lalique Bacchantes vase is at the forefront of the fine art glass available in the June 7th auction. The opalescent finish displays an extremely rare yellow-blue undertone that remains in immaculate condition, as does the entire piece. Depicting ten standing female nudes in various states of pose, the vase is a classic Art Deco design as well as a beautiful example of Art Deco glass. This particular model was created in 1927 and still bears an original, hand etched signature upon its base. The René Lalique Bacchantes vase will be sold at an auction estimate of $15,000-20,000.
JOSEPH DWIGHT STRONG JR - "Diamond Head, Hawaii - Launching the Outriggers, 1888," Oil on canvas
An extremely rare find is seen in this J.D. Strong oil painting, offered as lot 2048 in the December Fine Works of Art Auction. Not only is the Hawaiian subject matter a scarce theme for the artist, but the pieces that do remain tend to be substantially smaller in size. Any work of his that is pre-1900 is even more rare due to the ravenous effect that the Hawaiian humidity had on the paintings. By all accounts, it appears that a Hawaiian J.D. Strong of this size has never been offered at auction before. Titled "Diamond Head, Hawaii - Launching the Outriggers, 1888," the painting is estimated at $60,000-90,000.
Anonymous: A Japanese Album of Twelve Erotica Paintings
This collection of Japanese artworks is of particular interest due to their quality and their almost almost universally misunderstood genre. The album is dated to the 19th century and contains twelve erotic paintings in pencil and watercolor. This type of Japanese art is known as shunga and was largely created to convey the enjoyment of life, not to be viewed as a form of pornography. Generally, this type of art sought to express an ideal view of middle class urban Japanese society of the time. The intriguing painting collection will be auctioned at an estimate of $500-700.
Four Jade Decorations
This collection of four celadon jade decorations consists of a bookmark and three hairpins. The bookmark is of simple design, as the polished jade displays a lone carved curl at the top. A streamlined hairpin accompanies the bookmark, along with a pair of decoratively carved hairpins. Traditionally, these types of hairpins made from jade were reserved for women of a high stature. Ancient women often wore multiple hairpins to secure their hairstyle, as well as to produce a beautiful, decorative effect. The jade collection will be offered in the February estate sale at an estimate of $400-600.
