Elizabeth Murray (American 1940-2007) "Straight, No Chaser (Crossing), 1999"
Elizabeth Murray's sophisticated yet comical approach is wonderfully seen in "Straight No Chaser (Crossing), 1999." The hand colored paper construction is the 31st of 33 works. Murray's post-pop creation is not only playful and full of movement, but displays wonderful fluidity and color as well. Murray holds the distinction of being one of the few women artists to have had a retrospective at New York City's Museum of Modern Art and has been widely praised during the span of her 40 year career. "Straight No Chaser (Crossing), 1999" will be offered in the June Fine Sale at an estimate of $20,000-30,000.
Chinese Zither
The Asian Department will offer this lovely Chinese zither as lot 451. The wooden musical instrument measures approximately 47 inches by 7 inches and is accented by seven dark brown tassels. An inscription on the reverse bears a collectors seal, beautifully fashioned in gold colored paint. The Chinese zither originated over 2,300 years ago, making it one of the oldest Chinese musical instruments known. It was used to play a variety of folk and cultural classical Chinese music in the emperor’s court as well. The Chinese zither will be offered in the July estate auction at an estimate of $600-800.
Charles White (American 1918-1979) "Awaiting His Return, 1946"
This Charles White lithograph conveys the artistic sensitivity and emotional power that millions revere him for. "Awaiting His Return, 1946" depicts a forlorn woman, pensively staring to the side while resting her palm upon her chin. She is a solitary presence, sitting at a table with a lone picture behind her left shoulder. White successfully translates a wistful sadness while showing an incredible mastery of skilled draftsmanship. White's artistic expertise has been universally praised as he has received numerous honors and awards and been exhibited in some of the finest institutions in the world. "Awaiting His Return, 1946" will be offered in the June Fine Sale at an estimate of $6,000-9,000.
B.W. Wikstrom (Swedish/American 1840-1909) "Florida Marsh, 1901"
A founder of the Artists' Association of New Orleans, Bror Anders Wikstrom was a Swedish artist who was at the forefront of the New Orleans art scene in the late 19th century. Wikstrom's offering, "Florida Marsh," depicts grand cypress trees growing in a shaded swamp. Sunlight subtly permeates the back of the scene creating beautiful nuances in shading. Wikstrom's delicate use of light and easy brush strokes make the piece come to life in quite an inspiring way. The painting will be offered in the June Fine Sale at an estimate of $4,000-6,000.
Antique Patent Models
This interesting grouping of lots originated from a private Bay Area collector and were selected for their quality and collectibility. Two patent model furniture lots are being offered in the July estate auction. The first is a walnut drop leaf table circa 1875 with an estimate of $700-900. The other is a mahogany convertible chair marked H. Braunfeld with an estimate of $600-800. Other patent model items are available from the estate as well, including a mechanical steam pressure regulator circa 1863, a metal furnace from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and a mahogany lard cooler circa 1880.
Fancy Colored Diamond, Platinum, 18K Yellow Gold Ring
This gorgeous colored diamond is one of the largest in the Michaan's Auctions June Jewelry Sale. The stone is set in a platinum and 18 karat yellow gold ring being sold with an estimate of $14,000-18,000. The fancy, radiant-cut, light yellow diamond weighs 4.02 carats and is certified by a GIA Colored Diamond Grading Report that verifies the stone's natural color. The center stone is then flanked by two half moon-cut diamonds weighing a total of approximately 0.40 carats, complimenting the overall look beautifully.
Three Modern Chinese Black Silk Garments
From a Saratoga estate is this unusual collection of Chinese silk clothing. The lot includes a black three quarter sleeve length jacket with a bright red lining. Woven medallions with the symbol for longevity framed by depictions of bats decorate the coat. The jacket is then accompanied by a matching sheath dress with form enhancing darts about the waist. A similarly styled second jacket is included in the lot as well, with longevity symbols encased by a continuous floral motif. The clothing will be offered in the September Estate Auction at an affordable estimate of $300-500.
A Finely Carved Rhinoceros Horn 'Lotus' Libation Cup
A carved rhinoceros horn 'lotus' libation cup will be offered in the June Fine Asian Works of Art Auction. The piece is an extraordinary testament to the traditional art form. The expertly carved horn is from the 17th to 18th century and is fashioned in the form of a furled lotus leaf. Chinese rhinoceros horn works are estimated at a total number of less than 4,000 worldwide. The scarcity of these works of art explains why well-preserved rhinoceros horn carvings of the finest craftsmanship are extremely sought after in today's market. The exquisitely carved horn will be offered as lot 8096 with an estimate of $40,000-60,000.
Au Ho'nien (Ou Haonian, b.1935) "Yosemite Mountain"
This wonderful watercolor on paper is being offered in August at an estimate of $10,000-12,000. Titled "Yosemite Mountain," Au Ho-nien depicts the grand rock formation in a beautiful wash of pale blue. Purchased directly from the artist in China in 1977, it also displays an inscription to the left side and the signature "Au Ho-nien." Au Ho-nien is recognized around the world as a leading contemporary artist in Chinese painting. He is also the Hwakang Professor of Art at the Chinese Culture University, Taipei, which is the highest accolade given to an artist in Taiwan.
Alexander Gerhard Anton van Rappard (Dutch 1858-1892) "Cavaliers"
Dutch painter Alexander Gerhard Anton van Rappard’s oil "Cavaliers" highlights the July estate fine art offerings. The painting depicts a rural maiden and three of her admirers in a rustic dining area. Van Rappard’s paintings are quite rare due in part to his short life of only 33 years. During his brief painting career van Rappard studied under Lawrence Alma-Tadema and befriended Vincent van Gogh. The scarcity and quality of his works have lead them to be highly prized in the contemporary market. Van Rappard’s "Cavaliers" will be offered as lot 005 with an estimate of $8,000-12,000.
