Bio: American landscape photographer and environmentalist, born in San Francisco, the grandson of a wealthy timber baron. He spent his childhood exploring the then still wild Golden Gate. Starting in 1916 he began visiting the Yosemite/Sierra and using a simple Kodak 1 Brownie Box, he begins to record what he sees. In 1919 he joins the Sierra Club, which will become vital to his success as a photographer. In 1927 he forms a patron relationship with Albert Bender, a San Francisco insurance magnate and patron of the arts, who supports the publication of his first porfolio, Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras. Over the course of his over sixty year career, his work produces nearly four dozen books bearing his name and author/artist. The artist described himself as a photographer, lecturer, and writer. For him the environmental concerns of particular importance were Yosemite National Park, and the general preservation of wilderness, in addition to the Big Sur area, Alaska, the redwoods and the conservation of sea lions and otters.
