Robert Arneson "Me & Jackson, 1987" Lithograph
Highlighting the fine art offerings is this Robert Arneson lithograph titled "Me & Jackson, 1987." Notorious for incorporating his own image into his artwork, Arneson remained true to form as he is depicted as a red image that overlaps Jackson, the central image of the piece. Arneson is also an internationally known sculptor, largely regarded as the father of the ceramic Funk Art Movement. His works can be found in public and private collections from New York City to Kyoto, Japan. "Me & Jackson, 1987" will be offered in the June estate sale at an auction estimate of $2,500-3,500.
PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR - "Jeune Femme nue aux bras levés" Sanguine on paper
A true gem is found in lot 2014 in the Michaan's December Fine Works of Art Auction. This small red conte drawing of a nude female by renowned French Impressionist Pierre Renoir will be offered at an auction estimate of $25,000-50,000. Measuring approximately 21 by 16 centimeters, the sanguine on paper sketch depicts a woman delicately tending to her hair. The piece is from the once personal collection of prominent San Francisco philanthropist Caroline "Betty" Howard Hume. Hume was named Philanthropist of the Year in 2001 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, honored for her support of the San Francisco Symphony, Conservatory of Music and the Museum of Modern Art.
Olsen-Nolte Parade Saddle
This quality Olsen-Nolte parade saddle as lot 418 is yet another unique piece to be found at auction. The San Carlos, California based Olsen-Nolte Saddle Shop piece is in excellent, like new condition, custom made in the 1930s by the manufacturer. The sepia brown, floral impressed leather is joined by sterling silver accoutrements found in the saddle's tapaderos and stirrups. The seat measures approximately 21 inches in length, fit for a size large to extra large rider. The Olsen-Nolte parade saddle with sterling silver elements will be sold on August the 3rd at an auction estimate of $8,000-10,000.
Meissen Hand Painted Snake Handled Urn
This highly decorative Meissen porcelain urn is featured in Michaan's August Estate Auction. The urn displays numerous decorative motifs, with double snake handles striking a marked visual prominence. Twin coiling snakes rise from ornate foliage theme bases, resting their heads upon the urn’s rim. The neck of the urn is richly painted with a cobalt blue hue, offsetting various border designs. The central portion of the porcelain body is then hand painted with sprays of assorted spring blooms. The Meissen hand painted snake handled urn will be offered in the sale at an auction estimate of $1,000-1,500.
Max Slevogt - "Young Girl in the Window" Oil Painting
This Max Slevogt oil painting comes from quite a distinguished provenance, originating from the artist's estate only to be inherited by his son, Wolfgang Slevogt. In fact, a label inscribed in ink by the artist’s son reads "Hereby I confirm that the oil painting of the "Young Girl in the Window" . . . is by my father, Berlin, March 12, 1934, Wolfgang Slevogt." The plein air painting by one of the finest German Impressionists of the early 20th century depicts an outdoor view of his sumptuous home and gardens at Slevogthof Neukastel. The piece will be sold in the December Fine Works of Art Auction as lot 2006 at an estimate of $40,000-60,000.
Portrait Miniatures
From a Bay Area estate collection are 14 portrait miniatures in the April sale. Highlighted depictions include collectible images such as a military serviceman, a gentleman at his writing desk and lady at her tea table sold as one lot, a man of period styling and a folk oil on board portrait of a lady. These miniatures were used to express sentiments and keep memories of loved ones near. For example, they often served as a snapshot of the time, as soldiers and sailors kept portraits close by while they were on duty. For all collectors, this is a great opportunity to buy portrait miniatures.
Pennsylvania Dutch Tole Painted Coffee Pot
Highlighting the Furniture and Decorative Art Department's lot selection is this fine Pennsylvania Dutch tole painted coffee pot. The 19th century piece is fashioned with a crook spout and cheerful paintings of yellow fruit, alongside borders of berries and red and green leaves. The pot bears its original patina and is topped by a fitted, hinged, painted lid. The traditional colors and style of the Pennsylvania Dutch folk-art tradition of tole painting are clearly evident in this pot; a highly collectible and sought after piece for its rustic, whimsical appeal. The coffee pot will be auctioned in the June estate sale at an estimate of $1,000-1,500.
Mexican Enamel, Silver Snake Necklace
October jewelry showcases this bewitchingly eye-catching piece in a Mexican enamel and sterling silver snake necklace. Turquoise colored enamel work composes the snake’s scales, with each joint of the necklace held together by a sterling silver pin of a robin’s egg blue colored head. The articulated necklace holds a clever clasp that also provides the central focal point of the piece, crafted as the animal’s head resting upon it’s tail. A forked tongue finishes the necklace, to be auctioned on October the 5th as lot 033 at an estimate of $300-500.
Meissen Courting Couple Figural Group
Michaan's Furniture and Decorative Arts Department presents this lovely figural group in the spirit of St. Valentine’s Day. The courting couple is depicted upon a decorated base of vibrantly colored Deutsch Blumen. An amorous gent leans toward his lady love, whose full, floral patterned skirt also appears to be in full bloom. Detailed, hand paint work and a lustrous glaze add further beauty to the depiction of the lovers, to be sold February 2nd as lot 498 has an auction estimate of $1,000-1,500.
Louis Sullivan Terra Cotta Tile
This decorative terra cotta tile designed by Louis Sullivan will be sold as lot 3211 in Michaan's October Arts and Crafts Auction. The piece was acquired from Japan's famed Garden Museum Collection, one of the finest groupings of Tiffany masterworks ever assembled. Measuring a square 20 by 20 inches, Sullivan's architectural sensibilities can be seen throughout the ornate tile, from a master whom many revere as the "father of modernism." The decorative tile will be offered in the Main Gallery in an over 330 lot sale at an auction estimate of $15,000-17,000.
