Fine Huanghuali Furniture

Spotlighted furniture in Michaan's June Fine Asian Works of Art auction includes numerous offerings of fine huanghuali furniture. Both lots 7290 and 7291 feature paired huanghuali horseshoe back armchairs accompanied by singular side tables. Each of these sale lots will be offered at an estimate of $50,000-70,000 a piece. Lot 7292 is a straight back armchair of an angular design scheme, centering three panels of a twisted rope motif. This huanghuali armchair will be sold at an auction estimate of $30,000-40,000. Huanghuali continues to be a highly prized material, for its rarity as well as its beauty of natural swirling patterns and a translucent, shimmering appearance.

An Export Lacquered and Gilt-Painted Game Box

A Chinese export card and game box containing various implements is featured in June. This set contains four small boxes of similar decoration, sixty-eight counters, or chips, and eight trays in the manner of playing cards. The highly collectible mother of pearl chips are one of the most valuable components of the set, delicately carved as fish, rectangles and oblong forms with pictorial designs. The black and gold lacquer and gilt painted box is handsomely decorated by village scenes with sprays of flora and fauna. Finished by carved, baroque style legs, the piece will be auctioned at an estimate of $750-1,000.

Erle Loran, "The Docks," Oil Painting

Erle Loran's "The Docks" will be sold in Michaan's October estate auction as lot 115. Loran was a local art fixture in the Bay Area, becoming the leader of a group of painters known as the "Berkeley School." He was also the head of the Berkeley Art Department for approximately 30 years, with his painting students including Richard Diebenkorn and Sam Francis. Loran's work has been held by the Smithsonian Institution, the Los Angeles County Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. "The Docks" will be auctioned at an estimate of $800-1,000

Emerald, Diamond, Platinum, 18K Yellow Gold Necklace

This show-stopping diamond, emerald and platinum necklace centers a beautifully hued round cut emerald weighing approximately 25.00 carats. The emerald is flanked by 184 diamonds of varying cuts, weighing a total of over 39.00 carats. The stones are set in an articulated platinum, linked necklace mounting that measures 16 1/2 inches. Purportedly, the jewels were hand selected in Hong Kong to create the one of a kind piece. The emerald and diamond necklace will be offered at an auction estimate of $60,000-80,000.

Dirk Van Erp, Thomas Gotham Lamp

This remarkable Dirk van Erp and Thomas Gotham copper table lamp highlights offered lighting in Michaan's October Arts and Crafts Auction. The van Erp designed copper accents feature repeating cut-out oak tree motif decorations upon the approximate 19 inch diameter mica shade. The lamp’s porcelain body is a brown glazed Thomas Gotham creation, beautifully decorated by cascading, flowering pale pink crystals. The lamp was commissioned for renowned San Francisco architect Charles F. Strothoff in 1923, remaining by descent through the family to the present owner. The van Erp and Gotham lamp will be sold as lot 3123 at an estimate of $17,000-20,000.

Famille Rose Porcelain Plaques

This delightful screen featuring fourteen individually decorated porcelain plaques will be sold in Michaan's June Fine Asian Works of Art auction as lot 7431. The molded decorations on the plaques include depictions of flowers, insects, birds, landscapes and figures set upon a lustrous background of a rich turquoise hue. Each plaque is impressed with a four character Wang Bingrong mark upon the bottom, with the marks indicating the age to about the 19th or 20th century. This folding screen bears a total approximate measurement of 83 by 79 inches, to be sold at an auction estimate of $20,000-30,000.

Exhibition and Presentation Grade Multi-Blade Knife

This excellent multi-blade exhibition knife is of a fine presentation grade. The piece features engraved bolsters, faceted blades, a variety of accessories and pearl grip panels. One of the most prominent features is the four and a half inch spear point and lockable blade, measuring three-fourths of an inch in width at its widest point. Faceted blades are finely engraved and accompanied by fourteen accessories, including a corkscrew and scissors. This choice multi-blade knife will be sold in Michaan's Fine and Collectible Knives Auction on September the 6th as lot 2295 at an estimate of $30,000-40,000.

Enamel Gold Knights Templar Medal

This authentic Knights Templar Commander medal will be sold in September at an auction estimate of $900-1,200. The 14 karat yellow gold medal is fashioned as three main articulated pieces, each with a distinct design scheme. The top features garnet cabochons as well as black and white enamel. Upon the middle is a lengthwise nameplate, reading "WOODLAWN." A small red enamel cross then precedes the most substantial link, a large cross bearing elaborate engravings, enamelwork and decoration, finished by a white stone. A pair of small 10 karat yellow gold Sigma Chi fraternity pins completes the lot, lot listed number 180.

Dong Kingman (American 1911-2000) Four works: "Market Street," "Renato Shoe Repair," "La Beatrice & Downtown" & "Santa Barbara Savings"

Lot 089 is a collection of four works in the January estate auction from renowned artist Dong Kingman. The ink and marker on paper collection contains images of San Francisco, titled "Market Street," "Renato Shoe Repair," "La Beatrice & Downtown" and "Santa Barbara Savings." These pieces for auction are accompanied by certificates of authenticity as well as a letter from Monte James representing the Estate of Dong Kingman. Monte James is regarded as a leading private art dealer and curate with over 30 years of involvement in distinguished fine arts. The collection will be offered at an auction estimate of $800-1,200.

Crystal Palace exhibition multi-blade IXL folding knife

Michaan's Fine and Collectible Knives Auction presents this rare Crystal Palace Exhibition multi-blade IXL folding knife as lot 2112. Multiple tools are held within the piece that was once featured in the London exhibition of 1851. Considered one of the finest folding knives in existence, several blade and tool surfaces are exquisitely faceted and highly decorated. This piece was also prominently featured in the "Sheffield Exhibition Knives" publication featuring Clausen, Watts and McMickle. The knife will be sold on September the 6th in Michaan's Main Gallery at an auction estimate of $15,000-25,000.
