signed, numbered 294/375, dated, Chalk Verimilion and Sevenarts at verso on base.
Provenance: Glenshaw Estate.
Condition: Surface dust/dirt, no signs of repair under UV light, felt adhered under base, overall very good.
Bio: A fashion designer and illustrator, as well as set designer for french opera and ballet during the art deco period. In 1912, the artist moved to Paris from Russia and collaborated with fashion designer Paul Poiret. He begins selling his fashion design illustrations to American fashion houses. In 1915 he lands a contract with Harpers Bazaar, producing illustrations and covers. He produced over 240 covers for the magazine. His highly stylized illustrations depict models in mannered poses, draped in jewels, feathers and flowing fabrics. The same lavish style marks his theatrical designs for opening tableaus, finale scenes and costumes for French theatre. He produced work for the Folies-Bergere in Paris from 1919-1930. The artists falls into relative obscurity from the 1940s - 50s, but interest in his work emerges again in the 1960s when he begins to issue lithographs and sculptures of his designs. The artists work can be found in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as Museum 1999 in Tokyo.
