label taped verso.
Condition: Sheet toned, mat acid burn, dirt at upper left margin, white pigments at upper left area, white light buckeling toward the bottom.
Notes: Frame has light wear, approximate dimensions - framed: 32-5/8 x 25 inches. Bio: Born in NY into a German American family of musicians. The artist studied drawing at the Kuntstgewer be Schule in Hamburg and the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin, He worked as a caricaturist in the US, Germany and France. In Berlin he starts producing paintings and drawings depicting architectural subjects and street scenes. After encountering cubism in Paris he produces work which utilizes semi-transparent planes which create prismatic effects. In 1918 he meets Walter Gropius who invites him to teach at the Bauhaud School, where he serves as head of the print department. In 1924 he founded The Blue Four Group with colleagues Kandinsky, Klee and Jawlensky. In 1937 he leaves Berlin to teach at Mills College in Oakland. In 1945 his first retrospective, with work by Marsden Hartley, is held at The Museum of Modern Art in NY. Post-humous retrospectives of his work at The Dallas Museum of Contemporary Art, The Pasadena Art Museum, as well as The Whitney Museum of American Art.
