Condition: Canvas lined. Surface dust/dirt and aging cracks throughout the painting, paint chipped at center and slight abrasions. Edge of canvas taped. Visible inpaint under UV/Blacklight, especially at some areas at center, left side, and lower right. Dirt pockets and keys verso.
Notes: Frame is fragile, shows wear, and existing repairs, approximate dimensions - framed: 31-1/4 x 35 inches. Bio: Associated with John Muir, Keith traveled extensively to create illustrations for Muirs Picturesque California. Keith was part of a group of friends in the bay area who were associates of Muir and who supported the establishment of Yosemite National Park as well as the Sierra Club. Influenced by the French Barbizon painters, as well as American painter George Inness, he was a prolific artist, creating paintings which depict many of the most visually striking and historically significant areas of California. During the 1870s, he produced a number of 6 x10 panaromas, including those now in the collections of the Oakland Museum and the Mission Inn, in Riverside - hanging alongside the work of his peers Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. In the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many of his paintings were lost in the fire which consumed his studio.
