Condition: Surface dust/dirt, tiny scratches, aged patina, shows black spots due to oxidation, scratches underneath due to no base.
Bio: The artist Immigrates to the US with his family and, while residing in NY, he studies art at the Art Students League. He garners his first public recognition when he wins the Whitney 500 Prize for his The Immigrants sculpture, which depicts the suffering he witnessed while living on the east side. Arriving in CA in 1915 to assist with the sculptural work which was needed for the Panama Pacific Exhibition, he designs the figural groups for the Court of the Universe on the Arch of Triumph as well as the Panels of Art, which measure twenty-feet in height and are mounted to the Palace of Fine Arts. In 1925, the National Sculpture Society sponsors a traveling exhibit of his work in major art centers in the US and Europe. The artist is best known for his large scale monuments representing peace as well as his more modernist works which depict animals and simple forms. His work is seen throughout the Bay Area at sites such as The University of CA, San Francisco, The Great Meadow at Fort Mason, City Hall, Santa Clara, The Oakland Museum, San Rafael High School, among many others. His work can be found in the collections of The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Randall Museum, The California Academy of Sciences, among others.
